Candidate Bio:
My name is Octavia Cordon, but my friends call me Superwoman.
I was born and raised in New York City and later migrated to West Virginia close to 20 years ago. I consider myself a Mountain Mama now. I am:
- a proud Mother of 4,
- a Sister,
- a Friend and
- a Community advocate.
I have spent the last decade of my career working in education, early intervention, and community outreach.
Coming from a big city like New York, my goal was to bring my family to a new environment that would offer a safer alternative to what I was used to growing up in. West Virginia offered a slower pace I was looking for to raise my babies at the time and here we are. Growing up in a home filled with drug and alcohol abuse with parents with minimal education coming from the South made my childhood very difficult. I later realized I wanted better for my children and would not stop until I found it.
Since moving to WV, I have volunteered in many capacities since my children began KCS preschool. I was an active parent then and later became more active in my community. I love my community and want to do whatever I can to make a better place for children and families. Because schools are a part of every community, I want to be able to share various skills I’ve acquired along the way by running for the school board. I believe in transparency and believe that more hands can make the work light. I want to be able to bring all voices to the table to build a more collaborative platform we can believe in.
- The safety of our students is a priority.
- Teacher Shortages and Retention is a priority.
- Community Engagement is a priority.
- Academic Enrichment is a priority.
Join me as I work towards shifting the blame game into some action. Let’s work together to build a platform that will allow us to not only work together, but to understand each other and work towards workable solutions.
