Choosing the side of homeless people
Meet our Homeless Can’t Wait constituency team.
This is a photo of when Rick, John, Brianna, Ray, Pops, JD, Henry, and Ann met for the first time in May of 2019.
At that meeting, we imagined what it would look like if politicians cared as much about homeless people as they do about millionaire coal bosses.
And then the team members laid out their vision: an end to homelessness—especially veteran homelessness — smart spending on mental health and housing, fix the potholes, creative transportation solutions.
They also laid out their plan for building that kind of power.
- Step 1: Listen. Visit local shelters and other homeless communities around the state, listening to 100+ people who are directly, one-on-one and asking them what they would do if they were governor.
- Step 2: Organize. After they have their key issues and leaders identified, they can do voter registration and education efforts to put their issues at the forefront of WV politics.
They also told their stories.
“You have to take three buses just to get to a hospital.”
“I don’t care how many children you have, they’ll shut down your utilities if you’re late.”
